Luis Fonsi

Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero, who performs under the name Luis Fonsi, is a singer/songwriter and actor from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Even at a young age, he showed an interest in and aptitude for music, joining the San Juan children’s choir when he was only three. When he was 10 his family moved from Puerto Rico to Orlando, Florida. During high school, he was part of a group that performed locally called “Big Guys”, which included Joey Fatone who would later be a part of *NSYNC.

In 1998 he released his first album entitled Comenzaré (I Will Begin). The album was a hit across Latin America and reached number 11 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. While his earlier albums were popular in Latin America, his sixth album Paso a Paso and his seventh album Palabras del Silencio introduced him into international markets. The song “No Me Doy por Vencido”, was Luis Fonsi’s first appearance on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching number 92, and spent 21 weeks at number one on the Hot Latin Songs chart. It remains one of his biggest hits, and was Billboard’s “Latin Pop Song of the Decade”.

Luis Fonsi’s biggest hit to date came in January of 2017 when he released “Despacito” featuring Daddy Yankee. It reached number one on nearly every Latin Billboard chart and is the most-watched YouTube video ever with more than 6.7 billion views as of February 2020. The English remix featuring Justin Bieber is the longest-reigning number one song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 at 16 consecutive weeks. As of 2018 “Despacito” had broken seven Guinness World Records and sold more than 11 million records.

Luis Fonsi has won numerous awards. These include his first Latin Grammy Award for Song of the Year for the song “Aquí Estoy Yo”, which also won three Billboard Latin Music Awards. “Despacito” won four Latin Grammy Awards, seven Billboard Latin Music Awards and five Billboard Music Awards. His 2017 duo with Demi Lovato, entitled “Échame la Culpa” won Song of the Year at the Latin American Music Awards in 2018. Billboard named him “Leader of Latin Music’s New Generation” in 2019.

Rauw Alejandro

Raúl Alejandro Ocasio Ruiz, who performs as Rauw Alejandro, is a rapper, singer and composer from San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is a childhood friend of fellow Puerto Rican rapper Anuel AA. Alejandro originally pursued a career in football (or soccer for the Americans). After an injury when he was 20 he moved to Orlando Florida hoping to be scouted to play in the Premier Development League (PDL) but was unsuccessful. After leaving football he decided to switch to a musical career. He began publishing songs to SoundCloud in 2014, and in 2016 he released his debut mixtape Punto de Equilibrio. In 2018, he was part of Sony Music’s “Los Próximos” project, which sought to enlist new musical talent. Other artists noticed him as a result of his participation, which led to collaborations with artists like Kevin Roldán, Khea, Ozuna, Lunay and Lyanno. His first single as a lead artist, a collaboration with Alex Rose entitled “Toda”, was released in December 2017. The single peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs charts, and the music video on YouTube had over 1 billion views as of November 2020. His most successful song to date was the single “Fantasias” with Farruko, which peaked at number 12 on the US Latin chart and stayed there for 20 weeks. He released his debut album, Afrodisíaco, in November of 2020.

‘vacío’ – This term is both a noun and an adjective, and both forms appear in this song. As a noun it means ‘hole’, ’emptiness’, ‘vacuum’, ‘gap’, ‘void’, ‘abyss’, ‘space’. As an adjective it means ’empty’, ‘vacant’, ‘superficial’, or ’empty-headed’.

‘las palabras se las lleva el viento’ – This phrase uses a passive construction. Meaning ‘the words are blown away by the wind’, the focus is put on the item being acted upon (the words) rather than the actor (the wind).

‘el mío’ and ‘los míos’ – In Spanish possessive pronouns can be used with articles to reference a noun that has already been defined. For example ‘Compramos camisas ayer. La tuya es rosa, y la mía es azul’ (We bought shirts yesterday. Yours is pink, mine is blue). Both pronouns reference the feminine singular noun ‘la camisa’. Here the article ‘el’ refers to the previously referenced ‘cuerpo’, and los refers to ‘besos’.

‘ir a’ – The verb ‘ir’ means ‘to go’. As in English, when this verb is used with a place, it implies movement towards that place. But when it is used with another verb it implies that that action will be performed in the future. For example ‘voy a la tienda’ (I am going to the store) vs ‘voy a comer’ (I am going to eat).

‘volver a hacer’ – Literally translating as ‘to return to do’, this phrase means ‘to do again’. The verb ‘hacer’ can be replaced with any verb, and the meaning is that the action of that verb will be done again. For example, in this song we see ‘volver a verte’ meaning ‘to see you again’.

‘llenar’ vs ‘llenarse’ – While these verbs can both mean ‘to fill up’, the verb ‘llenar’ is used to speak of the action of a specific person or agent that is doing the filling. The pronominal ‘llenarse’ is used more in the sense of ‘to get full’, where something is filled up, but the agent of the filling is unkown or unmentioned. The focus is on the thing beng filled and not the filler.

‘tener que’ – While by itself the verb ‘tener’ means ‘to have’, when followed by ‘que’ it means to have to do, for example ‘tengo que irme’ (I have to leave), or ‘tienes que hacer tus deberes’ (you have to do your homework).
