About Lyrical Language

I’ve tried to provide a little of something for everyone on this site, and I encourage you to make use of the parts that speak to you. Only interested in the translation section? Great, skip straight to it. Know most of the words but need help with a few here and there? Mouse over the words you need help with in the lyrics section. Want to get into the nitty gritty of the lyrics? Then the grammatical breakdown is for you.

Each song has several sections:

Intro – This section gives some information on the specific song.

About the Artist – This section gives some information on the musicians.

Cultural References, Idioms and Explanations– This section gives information on specific items in the song that could use more explanation than what can fit in the popups or vocabulary chart. This includes idioms and other phrases whose meaning isn’t apparently clear by the words used. References to people, places and events will also be explained in this section. I highly recommend looking at this section, as it pulls items out of the song that will help you to connect with the target culture.

Song Lyrics with Grammatical Breakdown – This section provides the lyrics to the song. Mousing over a term will provide a popup of grammatical information on the term. This information is presented as follows:

  • Dictionary Term – This is the term as you would search for it in a dictionary. For example for verbs this will be the infinitive form, for adjectives the masculine singular form, and for nouns this will be the singular form.
  • Meaning – This is the meaning in English.
  • Part of Speech – This column contains the part of speech of each term.
  • Grammatical Info – This column contains additional grammatical information for the term.
  • Context/More Info – If this term is used within a larger phrase that gives it meaning the phrase will be provided here. Other additional grammatical information may appear here if extra space was necessary.

Grammar Chart – I have provided the grammatical breakdown for each song in chart form as well. There is a link to this breakdown in the “Song Lyrics with Grammatical Breakdown” section of the song. The original layout of this chart provides the terms in the order they appear in the song, grouped by section (verse 1, chorus, verse 2, etc), however the chart can be reordered to see them in other ways, such as in alphabetical order or by part of speech.

As space in both the popups and the grammar chart is limited, many abbreviations have been used. An explanation of the abbreviations can be found here.

Lyrics with Translation – Songs can be difficult to translate. Even within one’s own language, song lyrics often use language in a less concrete manner than other usages, and therefor leave room for interpretation. The translations I provide are my interpretation of the lyrics. At times I also provide alternate interpretations in parenthesis.
