Belgian rapper, singer and songwriter Stromae is back and I’m so excited!!! After more than 8 years since his last, highly-acclaimed album Racine Carrée in 2013, he has finally released this new single. It pays homage to the members of society who work the worst hours, such as cleaners, cooks, pilots, flight attendants, drivers, fisherman and caregivers. Those who don’t have time or desire to celebrate. Verse 2 takes a mocking tone towards entitled customers. It reached number 1 on the Belgian charts and number 3 on the French charts.
‘santé’ – This term means ‘health’. In this context, it is a shortened form of the phrase ‘à ta/votre santé’, a common toast in French, similar to ‘cheers’ in English.
‘À ceux qui n’en ont pas’ – This is an example of the adverbial pronoun ‘en’ used to replace a noun when discussing quantity. For example ‘J’ai deux bouteilles’ (I have two bottles) can be replaced with ‘J’en ai deux’ if ’bouteilles’ is understood. If this phrase appeared on its own I would have translated it ‘to those who don’t have any’. However, as it appears again directly after the phrase ‘j’aimerais lever mon verre’ meaning ‘I’d like to raise my glass’ I felt that the correct translation here is ‘who don’t have one’ as they don’t have ‘a glass’. I have used this translation throughout.
‘bordel’ – This term literally means ‘brothel’ or ‘whorehouse’ but in colloquial language it also means ‘mess’.
‘tu t’prends des vestes au vestiaire’ – In more formal language the verb ‘prendre’ would not be reflexive, however in colloquial speech ‘se prendre’ means ‘to get’. So it is saying she takes coats in the coatroom, which is her job. However, this being Stromae I wonder if this isn’t a play on words. The phrase ‘se prendre une veste’ means ‘to suffer a defeat’ or ‘to take a beating’ I think this is meant to imply the defeating nature of her job.
‘faire semblant’ – Literally translating as ‘to make semblance’ this phrase means ‘to pretend’.
‘toute façon’ – This is a shortened version of the phrase ‘de toute façon’ which means ‘anyway’ or ‘anyhow’. It would translate literally as ‘of all ways’.
‘se prendre pour’ – Literally translating as ‘to take oneself for’, this phrase can also be translated as ‘to believe oneself to be’ or ‘to think oneself’. For example in this song we see ‘ tu t’prends pour ma mère ?’ which means ‘you think you’re my mom?’.
‘propre’ – Some French adjectives have different meanings depending on whether they appear before or after the noun. ‘Propre’ is one of these. When it precedes the noun it means ‘own’, for example ‘mon propre livre’ meaning ‘my own book’. When it follows the noun it means ‘clean’, for example ‘my livre propre’ means ‘my clean book’.
‘par terre’ – Literally translating as ‘by earth’ or ‘by land’, this phrase means ‘on the floor’ or ‘on the ground’.
‘qu’ce soit propre, qu’on puisse y manger par terre’ – The subjunctive is used here (soit, puisse) because this phrase is an order.
‘y manger’ – This is an example of the adverbial pronoun ‘y’ when it is used to replace a place. In this use, it is most commonly translated as ‘there’. In this example, the ‘there’ is wherever he is eating.
‘s’y frotter’ – This is a play on words. The verb ‘frotter’ means to scrub and fits with the cleaning jobs discussed in the lyrics. The phrase ‘se frotter à’ means ‘to cross word with’ or ‘to get on the wrong side of’. It is an example of the other use of the adverbial pronoun ‘y’, when it replaces the object of the preposition ‘à’. Here ‘à moi’ is replaced with ‘y’.
‘tu pourras toujours te brosser’ – This is another play on words. The verb ‘brosser’ means ‘to brush’, once again in line with the professions meantioned in this song. The phrase ‘tu peux te brosser’ means ‘you can forget about it’ or ‘take a hike’.
‘hôtesse de l’air’ – Literally translating as ‘hostess of the air’, this phrase means ‘flight attendant’ or ‘cabin crew member’ when speaking of female crew members. Male crew members are called ‘steward’ or ‘membre de l’équipage’.
‘marin-pêcheur’ – This is a compound noun meaning ‘deep-sea fisherman’. It is comprised of the nouns ‘marin’ meaning ‘sailor’ and ‘pêcheur’ meaning ‘fisherman’. The adjective ‘marin’ means ‘marine’, ‘sea’ or ‘seafaring’.
‘peine de cœur’ – Literally translating as ‘pain of heart’, this phrase means ‘heartache’.
‘ne pas avoir le cœur à’ – Literally translating as ‘to not have the heart to’, this phrase means ‘to not feel like’ or ‘to not be in the mood’
