“Magia” is a single by Spanish singer/songwriter Álvaro Soler. It has been released in advance of his upcoming album, also entitled Magia, set to be released in July of 2021.

About the Artist

Álvaro Tauchert Soler is a singer/songwriter of Spanish and German descent. Born in Barcelona, he lived in Tokio Japan from the time he was en until he was seventeen. After returning to Barcelona he started the band Urban Lights with his brother and some friends, which established a local following. In 2014 he broke up the band and moved to Germany, where he released the single “El mismo sol” in April of 2015. The single was a hit across Europe and Latin America, especially in Italy, Switzerland and Mexico, and its success led him to release his first album Eterno Agosto in June of 2015. He has since released a second album which also saw success.

‘traer’ vs ‘traerse’ – While both of these mean ‘to bring’, the pronominal version ‘traerse’ is more emphatic, putting emphasis on the fact that the item was brought.

‘Peter Pan’ – This is a fictional character, a mischievous young boy who lives in Neverland and never grows up, created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie.

‘Rock and roll’ – This is a genre of music that evolved during the late 1940s and early 1950s in the United States.

‘de cine’ – Literally translating as ‘of cinema’, this is said of things that are so good that they deserve to be in movies or could have come from a movie. According to the DRAE, it is said of a thing that, for its richness, beauty or luxury, seems more reminiscent of cinematographic fiction than reality.

‘Antes de que’ – This phrase means ‘before’, and will always be followed by the subjunctive. In this case it affects the verb ‘pillar’ on the following line.

‘por si’ – Literally translating as ‘for if’, this phrase means ‘in case’.

‘agua’ – This is a feminine noun meaning ‘water’, however it is somewhat unique. As the word begins with an initial stressed ‘a’, the singular form is proceeded by ‘el’ and ‘un’ rather than ‘la’ and ‘una’.

‘oye’ – This is the second person singular (tú) imperative (comand) form of the verb ‘oír’ meaning ‘to hear’ or ‘to listen to’. It can either be used to tell soemone to ‘listen!’, or can be used as an interjection to me ‘hey!’.

‘venir’ vs. ‘venirse’ – While both versions mean ‘to come’, the pronominal version puts more emphasis on the action of leaving one place for another, often showing an act of willpower or an unexpected or permanent departure.
