Jamal Manuel Issa Serrano, who performs as Jamule, is a rapper of Spanish and Lebanese descent from Essen, Germany. His first single entitled “NBA”, off of his 2019 EP entitled Ninio, made it onto the German singles chart at position 97. His first full album, etitled LSD, reached number 5 on the German Albums chart, and the single “Ich hol dich ab” reached number 5 on the German Singles chart. His 2020 collaboration with the production team KitschKrieg, entitled “Unterwegs”, reached number 1 on the German Singles chart.

‘zwar’ – This term is difficult to translate on it’s own. It is meant to signal to the reader or lister that, despite a statement being made, information is coming that will put parameters or limits on what is being stated. ‘Zwar’ always appears in a first statement, and will be followed by a second statement containing a rebuttal or a qualification of the first statement. The rebuttal statement will start with an adversative or concessive adverb. Most often this will be ‘aber’ (but), ‘doch’ (but, however), or ‘jedoch (but, however)’, but adverbs such as ‘dennoch’ (anyway, regardless), ‘trotzdem’ (still, regardless, nevertheless), ‘allerdings’ (however, though), or ‘immerhin’ (at least) can also be used. In this song the example we see is “Ich hab’ es zwar gesagt, doch es war so nicht gemeint” meaning ‘Yeah, I said it, but it was not meant that way’. In order to give an idea that a limiting statement is coming in the English translation I have added the word ‘yeah’.

‘noch immer’ – Literally translating as ‘still always’, this phrase means ‘still’. It has a slighly different meaning than ‘noch’ alone, implying that the thing that is still happening has been happening for some time.

‘es ist mir egal’ – Literally translating as ‘it is unimportant to me”, this phrase means “it doesn’t matter” or “I don’t care”. However, in this song we see the negative form ‘es ist mir nicht egal’, which would literally mean ‘it doesn’t not matter to me’ or ‘I don’t not care’. As a double negative creates a positive, Jamule is saying that it does matter to him.

‘sich denken’ – As with so many other terms, there is a nuanced difference between the verb ‘denken’ and the reflexive form ‘sich denken’. In the non-reflexive form ‘denken’ means ‘to think’ more in the general sense, or to be thinking about something at that specific moment. The reflexive form has more of a meaning of having mulled something over inside oneself. It can mean that you really understand something, that you saw something coming, or that you have already come to a certain conclusion. Aside from being translated as ‘to think’ it can also often be translated as ‘to figure’.

‘nicht normal’ – Literally translating as ‘not normal’, this phrase also means ‘crazy’, ‘insane’ or ‘strange’.

‘Angst haben’ – This is one of the expressions using the verb ‘haben’. Literally translating as ‘to have fear’, this phrase means ‘to be afraid’ or ‘to be scared’.

‘zurückkommen’ – This is a compound term meaning ‘to come back’ or ‘to return’ that is made from the combined terms ‘zurück’ meaning ‘back’ and ‘kommen’ meaning ‘to come’.
