Calogero released the new single “La rumeur” on July 9, 2020. It is currently number 36 on the SNEP Radio Classifications chart, having spent 4 weeks on the chart so far. It is considered one of the ‘tubes de l’été’, or hits of the summer for this year. This single currently does not appear on any album.
Calogero Joseph Salvatore Maurici is a singer/songwriter from Échirolles, near Grenoble France. He got his start in music at 16 under the name Charly, when he started the group Les Charts with Francis Maggiulli and his brother Giocchino. The group was noticed by France Gall in October of 1987 and were given a recording contract. They released five albums between 1989 and 1997, with the second, Notre monde à nous, earning gold certification. In 1997 the group broke up with each member pursuing a solo career. In 1999 he released his first solo album Au milieu des autres, but it was his second album Calogero in 2002 that gained him popularity, earning diamond certification. He has won numerous awards, including two NRJ Music Awards and three Victoires de la musique music awards, including song of the year for the song “Un jour au mauvais endroit” which discussed a 2012 double murder that took place in his hometown of Échirolles.
‘se faire passer pour’ – Literally translating as ‘to make oneself pass for’ this phrase means ‘to pose as’, ‘to pretend to be’ or ‘to pass oneself off as’.
‘tox’ – This is a shortened version of the term ‘toxicomane, this phrase means ‘drug addict’, ‘druggie’ or ‘junkie’
‘prendre de l’ampleur’ – The noun ‘ampleur’ means ‘breadth’, ‘sweep’, ‘size’, ‘extent’, ‘scope’ or ‘scale’. When you add the verb ‘prendre’ meaning ‘to take’ the phase means ‘to be on the rise’, ‘to increase’ or ‘to spread’.
‘tourner autour de’ – Translating literally as ‘to revolve around’ in the sense of doing circles around something, this phrase means ‘to involve’ or ‘to be about’.
‘faire peur’ – As ‘peur’ is a noun, in French the verb ‘faire’ is used when discussing making someone scared. As a side-note however, if discussing making someone a state that is described by an adjective, then the verb “rendre’ would be used. For example “tu me rends heureux” (you make me happy).
‘montrer du doigt’ – Literally translating as ‘to show with the finger’, this phrase means ‘to point at’ or ‘to point to’.
‘vingt heures’ – There are a couple thing to note here. First, as seen here, France typically uses the 24 hour clock. Secondly, 20:00 (or 8:00 pm for those of us in the US) is the time of France’s evening news.
‘gaffe’ – The noun ‘gaffe’ means ‘blunder’ or ‘gaffe’, which doesn’t make much sense in this context. What I think is actually meant in this line is a shortened form of the phrase ‘faire gaffe à’ which means ‘to be careful with’ or ‘to watch out for’.

Lyrics with Translation
Songs in any language often leave room for multiple interpretations. Following is my interpretation of the song lyrics.
La rumeur The rumor
[Verse 1] Elle passe d’un bruit qui court en une des kiosques It goes as a noise that runs in one of the kiosks Elle peut faire passer ton père pour un tox It can make your dad look like a druggie Court et court et elle prend de l’ampleur Runs and runs and it spreads Elle tourne autour de toi, la rumeur It’s about you, the rumor
[Verse 2] Elle court de bouche en bouche, de porte en porte It circulates from mouth to mouth, from door to door Tu appuies sur une touche et elle s’exporte You press a key and it exports itself Court et court et elle adore faire peur It runs and it runs and it loves to cause fear Elle te montre du doigt, la rumeur It’s pointing at you, the rumor La rumeur The rumor
[Verse 3] Un post à midi, un flash à vingt heures A post at noon, a newsflash at eight o’clock C’est un chuchotement dans un haut-parleur It’s a whisper in a speaker Court et court, elle t’a dans son viseur Runs and runs, it has you in it’s sights Elle parle déjà de toi, la rumeur It’s already talking about you, the rumor La rumeur The rumor
[Bridge] La rumeur est lâchée, prête à lyncher The rumor is loose, ready to lynch Et plus certains démentent, et plus ça l’alimente And the more some deny it, the more it feeds it La rumeur est lâchée, ton nom taché The rumor is loose, your name stained Elle balance et elle crache, ce sont des vies qu’elle gâche She swings and she spits, these are lives she ruins
[Outro] La rumeur The rumor Gaffe, gaffe, gaffe à la rumeur Watch out, watch out, watch out for the rumor Gaffe, gaffe, gaffe à la rumeur Watch out, watch out, watch out for the rumor La rumeur The rumor Gaffe, gaffe, gaffe à la rumeur Watch out, watch out, watch out for the rumor Gaffe, gaffe, gaffe à la rumeur Watch out, watch out, watch out for the rumor Gaffe, gaffe, gaffe à la rumeur Watch out, watch out, watch out for the rumor Gaffe, gaffe, gaffe à la rumeur Watch out, watch out, watch out for the rumor Gaffe, gaffe, gaffe à la rumeur Watch out, watch out, watch out for the rumor
La rumeur The rumor La rumeur The rumor La rumeur The rumor La rumeur The rumor La rumeur The rumor Gaffe, gaffe, gaffe à la rumeur Watch out, watch out, watch out for the rumor Gaffe, gaffe, gaffe à la rumeur Watch out, watch out, watch out for the rumor Gaffe, gaffe, gaffe à la rumeur Watch out, watch out, watch out for the rumor Gaffe, gaffe, gaffe à la rumeur Watch out, watch out, watch out for the rumor
