Enrique Iglesias

Enrique Miguel Iglesias Preysler is a singer, songwriter, actor, and record producer from Madrid, Spain. He is the youngest child of singer Julio Iglesias. Early on Iglesias used the stage name “Enrique Martínez” (supposedly a singer from Guatamala), both because he didn’t want his father to know about his musical career, and because he didn’t want the Iglesias name to help advance his career. He borrowed money from his nanny to record a demo, containing one Spanish song and two English songs and his father’s former publicist Fernán Martínez helped him to promote it. He was signed to Fonovisa Records.

He released his first album, entitled Enrique Iglesias, in July of 1995. It sold half a million copies in the first week, which at the time was a rare accomplishment for an album in a language other than English. His 2002 album Quizás would provide several firsts for a Spanish-language album. It debuted at number twelve on the Billboard 200 albums chart, which was the highest a Spanish-language album had placed on that chart at the time. It was also the fastest selling Spanish album in five years, selling a million copies in one week. The single “Para Qué La Vida” was the only Spanish-language song to reach one million plays on US radio. The single “Quizás” was the first Spanish-language music video to be played on MTV’s Total Request Live, as well as the first Spanish song to be performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Iglesias has won more than 200 awards including 23 Billboard Music Awards and 36 Billboard Latin Music Awards, 8 American Music Awards, 1 Grammy , 5 Latin Grammy Awards, 10 World Music Awards, and 6 MTV awards. His songs have reached number one at least 150 times across the various Billboard charts. He holds the record for the most number-one singles on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks Chart with 27 singles. He has have five singles in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100, two of which reached number one. He is one of the best-selling Latin music artists, with an estimate of more than 70 million records sold. Billboard named him the “King of Latin Pop”.

Cultural References, Idioms and Explanations

‘rumba’ – This term may refer to a variety of music styles. The term was originally used as a synonym for ‘party ‘in Cuba. In the context of this song I think ‘party’ makes more sense.

‘funda’ – This term means ‘cover’, ‘case’ or sheath’. It also has the slang meaning of ‘money’, and in Colombia it can man ‘skirt’. ‘Money’ seems like the most likely meaning in this context to me.

‘pasarla bien’ – Literally translating as ‘to spend it well’ (spend as in time), both ‘pasarla bien’ and ‘pasarlo bien’ mean ‘to have a good time’ or ‘to have fun’.

‘rumbear’ – While in standard usage this term means ‘to wander’ or ‘to amble’, in colloquial usage (like rumba above) it means ‘to party’, ‘to go out, or ‘to go out on the town’.

‘Que siga la rumba’ – This is an example of the imperative tense being used in the third person to suggest or order that a third party or parties be allowed or made to do something. A famous example of this in English would be “Let them eat cake”. Here the phrase means ‘let the party continue’.

‘Hennessy’ – Hennessy is a French cognac (variety of brandy) distiller headquartered in Cognac, France. Selling about 50 million bottles a year worldwide (40% of the world’s cognac), it is the world’s largest cognac producer.

‘aguardiente’ – A combination of the words ‘agua’ (water) and ‘ardiente’ (burning or fiery), this is a generic term referring to alcoholic beverages that contain between 29% and 60% alcohol by volume.

‘pa arriba, pa abajo, pa’l centro, pa dentro’ – More often seen as ‘¡Arriba, abajo, al centro, pa’ dentro!’, this s a common way of toasting in Spanish speaking countries. The glasses are first held up, then lowered, then moved towards the center of the group, with ‘pa dentro’ referring to the drinks being swallowed or ‘put inside’ everyone. I guess something like ‘bottoms up’ might be the closest English equivalent. In this song the toast has been broken up, with content between ‘pa’l centro’ and ‘pa dentro’.

‘Reportarse’ – This verb means ‘to report’ as in a student reporting to the principle’s office, or a member of the military reporting for duty.

‘mami’ – While this term can mean ‘mommy’, it is very often used as a slang term to refer to an attractive woman, a female romantic partner, or a close female friend. I have chosen to leave this term untranslated.

‘¿qué tiene’ de malo, que yo me esté emborrachando?’ – As ‘tener de malo’ means ‘to be wrong with’ and expresses an emotion, and as there are two different subjects (tú y yo), the following verb ‘estar’ is in the subjunctive mood.

‘Ustedes’ vs ‘vosotros’ – The second person plural ‘vosotros’ is used in Spain, but is rarely used in Latin America. Instead the third person plural ‘Ustedes’ is used for all groups, whether the relation is formal or informal. There are several instances in this song, for example ‘Pa’ qué me invitan’ and ‘Repórtense’.

[Pre-Chorus]
Champán y fútbol y rumba

La fiesta no para y gastamo’ la funda
La vida es una y no hay una segunda

Bebiendo Hennessy, wheeleando en el Jetski
No me pelee’, baby, que hoy estoy feli’
Empezamos en la playa y nos vamo’ pa’ mi cama
Mueve el culo como bailan en Brasil
Baby, solo dame la señal
Porque el alcohol a me tiene un poco mal
Un shot de aguardiente y me compongo
Pa’ qué me invitan si saben cómo me pongo
Baby, pa’ rriba, pa’ bajo y pa’l centro
To’ el mundo estamo’ borracho’ y pa’ dentro
Pasarla bien no es un delito
Trae la familia y trae hasta el perrito

Lyrics with Translation

Songs in any language often leave room for multiple interpretations. Following is my interpretation of the song lyrics.

Fútbol & Rumba
Football & Parties

[Pre-Chorus]
Champán y fútbol y rumba
Champagne and football and parties
Y el reggaeton retumba
And reggaeton is booming
La fiesta no para y gastamo’ la funda
The party doesn’t stop and we spend the money
La vida es una y no hay una segunda
There’s one life and there is no second one

[Chorus]
Vamo’ a bailar tú y yo, mujer
We’re going to dance, you and I, woman
El party prender, pasarla bien
Light up the party, have a good time
Hoy vamo’ a rumbear, hoy vamo’ a beber
Today we’re going to party, today we’re going to drink
Y del uno al die’, yo te doy cien
And from one to ten, I’ll give you one hundred
Vamo’ a bailar tú y yo, mujer
We’re going to dance, you and I, woman
El party prender, pasarla bien
Light up the party, have a good time
Hoy vamo’ a rumbear, hoy vamo’ a beber
Today we’re going to party, today we’re going to drink
Y del uno al die’, yo te doy cien
And from one to ten, I’ll give you one hundred
Que viva la fiesta
Long live the party
Que la vida es una
There’s only one life
De aquí no no’ vamo’
We’re not leaving here
Que siga la rumba
Let the party continue

[Verse 1]
Bebiendo Hennessy, wheeleando en el Jetski
Drinking Hennessy, wheeling on the Jetski
No me pelee’, baby, que hoy estoy feli’
Don’t fight me, baby, because I’m happy today
Empezamos en la playa y nos vamo’ pa’ mi cama
We started at the beach and we’re going to my bed
Mueve el culo como bailan en Brasil
Move your ass as they dance in Brazil
Baby, solo dame la señal
Baby, just give me the signal
Porque el alcohol a mí me tiene un poco mal
Because the alcohol has me a little messed up
Un shot de aguardiente y me compongo
A shot of liquor and I compose myself
Pa’ qué me invitan si saben cómo me pongo
Why invite me if you know how I get
Baby, pa’rriba, pa’bajo y pa’l centro
Baby, above, below, to the center
To’ el mundo estamo’ borracho’ y pa’ dentro
We’re all drunk, and bottoms up
Pasarla bien no es un delito
Having a good time isn’t a crime
Trae la familia y trae hasta el perrito
Bring the family and even bring the puppy

[Chorus]
Vamo’ a bailar tú y yo, mujer
We’re going to dance, you and I, woman
El party prender, pasarla bien
Light up the party, have a good time
Hoy vamo’ a rumbear, hoy vamo’ a beber

My friends who are a bad influence
Repórtense que hoy es sábado
Report in because today is Saturday
Cerveza fría, paz y alegría
Cold beer, peace and joy
Hoy me voy viral y hago un escándalo
Today I’m going viral and making a scene
Mami, ¿qué tiene’ de malo, que yo me esté emborrachando?
Mami, why is it bad to you that I’m getting drunk?
Si tú me conociste en la rumba
If you met me at a party
¿Qué e’ lo que te está incomodando?
What’s bothering you?

[Pre-Chorus]
Champán y fútbol y rumba
Champagne and football and parties
Y el reggaeton retumba
And reggaeton is booming
La fiesta no para y gastamo’ la funda
