Considering Daddy Yankee’s influence on Latin music, it’s past time to get him up here. While it isn’t his most popular song, it is one of his most recent, and I enjoy it.

“Definitivamente” is a collaboration between Puerto Rican rapper and singer Daddy Yankee and Panamanian singer Sech. It was released in January 2020 and reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart.

Daddy Yankee

Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, who performs as Daddy Yankee, is a singer, songwriter, rapper, actor and record producer from Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. He is known as the “King of Reggaeton”, and is crediting with coining the term ‘reggaeton’ to describe the musical genre emerging from Puerto Rico in the mid 90’s. He first appeared on DJ Playero’s 1991 mixtape entitled Playero 34 with the song “So’ Persigueme, No Te Detengas”. Throughout the 90’s he would release solo music and appear on several of DJ Playero’s other mixtapes, which would later be regarded as the first reggaeton songs produced. His early music was successful in Puerto Rico, but not throughout Latin America.

His 2004 album Barrio Fino enjoyed international success. It won Billboard’s “Reggaeton Album of the Year” in 2005 and made history as the top-selling Latin Music album of the decade for 2000-2009. His 2017 collaboration with Puerto Rican pop singer Luis Fonsi “Despacito” was even more successful. It reached number one on nearly every Latin Billboard chart and is the most-watched YouTube video ever with more than 6.7 billion views as of February 2020. The English remix featuring Justin Bieber is the longest reigning number one song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 at 16 consecutive weeks. As of 2018 “Despacito” had broken seven Guinness World Records and sold more than 11 million records.

Daddy Yankee has won numerous international awards, and is one of the most recognized reggaeton artists within the industry. As of 2017 he had won 5 Latin Grammy Awards, 2 Billboard Music Awards, 14 Billboard Latin Music Awards, 2 Latin American Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award and 6 ASCAP Awards. He has a star on the Puerto Rican Walk of Fame, and was one of Time’s 100 most influential people in 2006. In 2009 he and was named the the “Most Influential Hispanic Artist” by CNN and in 2016 he received the “Industry Leader Award” at the Latin Billboard Awards.

Sech

Sech is pretty new to the Latin music scene.

Carlos Isaías Morales Williams, who performs as Sech, is a singer from the Río Abajo township of Panama City, Panama. His parents were both pastors, and he started singing in his church’s choir. After high school he produced music on the side while working in construction and the food service industries. He also worked as a street vendor, singing to his customers. His song “Miss Lonely” went viral in Colombia in 2017 and attracted the attention of producer Dimelo Flow.

He is best known for his 2019 song “Otro Trago”, which reached number one in Panama, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Peru Paraguay, Honduras and Mexico. His 2019 album Sueños reached number three on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart, and was number three on the “25 Best Latin Albums of 2019” list by Rolling Stone.

He has collaborated with numerous other Latin artists including Maluma, Nicky Jam, Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny, Lenny Tavárez, Justin Quiles and Dalex. His second album 1 of 1 is set to be released on May 21, 2020, and will feature appearances from Daddy Yankee, Arcángel, Ozuna, Nando Boom, and Lenny Tavárez.

‘por ahí’ – Literally meaning ‘for there’, this phrase means ‘around there’.

‘quedar en visto’ – Literally meaning ‘to leave in sight’ this phrase is one of several similar phrases throughout the spanish speaking world, such as ‘dejar en visto’ and ‘clavar en visto’. It means ‘to leave a text message read but unanswered’.

‘Tú lo sientes’ – The verb ‘sentir’ has two meanings, both of which work here. It can mean ‘to feel’ or ‘to be sorry’. This line could either mean ‘you feel it’ or ‘you’re sorry about it’. Your guess is a good as mine as to which meaning was the intended one.

‘los dos’ – While this phrase literally means ‘the two’, in normal usage it often means ‘the two of us’ or ‘both of us’.

‘ir a’ – The verb ‘ir’ means ‘to go’. As in English, when this verb is used with a place, it implies movement towards that place. But when it is used with another verb, it implies that that action will be preformed in the future. For example ‘I am going to the store’ ‘(voy a la tienda’) vs ‘I am going to eat’ (‘voy a comer’).

‘darse’ – The verb ‘dar’means ‘to give’, but when made reflexive, it means ‘to occur’.

‘lo debido’ – Literally translating as ‘the required’, this phrase means ‘the right thing’, ‘the correct thing (to do)’, or ‘what’s to be expected’.

‘oye’ – This is the second person singular (tú) imperative (comand) form of the verb ‘oír’ meaning ‘to hear’ or ‘to listen to’. It can either be used to tell soemone to ‘listen!’, or can be used as an interjection to me ‘hey!’.

‘tumba el piquete’ – This is another somewhat perplexing phrase for me. ‘Piquete’ normally means a ‘prick’, a ‘bite’ or a ‘sting’. In reggaeton ‘piquete’ often means ‘having a lo of swag’, although this meaning doesn’t seem to fit in this context. Other meanings I found online are ‘to smash them’, ‘to do something awesome’ or ‘to get rid of a nuisance’. ‘Smashing them’ seems like the most probable meaning to me in this context.

‘saber de’ alguien – Literally translating as ‘to know of’ someone, this phrase means ‘to hear from’ someone.

‘jodío’ – This is an adj from the verb ‘joder’, a vulgar way of saying ‘to have sex’, ‘to annoy someone’, ‘to screw someone over’ or ‘to screw (f**k) up’. In this context he’s saying that he’d have to be in a lot of trouble, or really ‘screwed’ to call her.

‘de verdad’ – Literally translating as ‘of truth’, this phrase means ‘seriously’ or ‘really’.

‘agarra tu camino’ – This phrase translates literally as ‘grab your path’, but I think a better translation in this context would be ‘hit the road’.

‘lo que’ – Literally translating as ‘it that’, this phrase better translates as ‘what’, ‘whatever’, or ‘which’.
