Dákiti by Bad Bunny and Jhay Cortez

“Dákiti” is a collaboration between Puerto Rican rapper/singer Bad Bunny and Puerto Rican singer Jhay Cortez. It was released in October of 2020 as the lead single from Bad Bunny’s third studio album, El Último Tour Del Mundo. This single was the first song in history to simultaneously debut in the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and as number one on the Hot Latin Songs chart. It was also the first Spanish-language song to simultaneously top both the Billboard Global 200 and the Global Excluding US charts.

To be honest, I have been quite hesitant to do this song due to its vulgarity and explicit nature. But the fact that it has spent 63 weeks on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart and is still sitting near the top (it is number 3 this week after sitting at number 2 for a couple of weeks) makes clear just how popular it is. And if people are going to be listening to something, I’d rather they understand what they are listening to. But please be forewarned, this song is quite explicit, and I don’t encourage learners to go around speaking like this.

‘Dákiti’ – This is the name of a beach in Puerto Rico.

‘enterarse de’ – The verb ‘enterar’ is a verb that changes meaning when made pronominal/reflexive. ‘Enterar’ means ‘to inform’, ‘to tell’, ‘to notify’ or ‘to advise’. ‘Enterarse’ means ‘to notice’, ‘to realize, ‘to see’, ‘to find out’ or ‘to discover’.

‘notarse’ – The verb ‘notar’ means ‘to notice’, ‘to observe’, ‘to realize’ or ‘to perceive’. The pronominal form ‘notarse’ means ‘to show’ or ‘to become obvious’.

‘ir a’ – The verb ‘ir’ means ‘to go’. As in English, when this verb is used with a place, it implies movement towards that place. But when it is used with another verb, it implies that that action will be performed in the future. For example ‘I am going to the store’ ‘(voy a la tienda’) vs ‘I am going to read’ (‘voy a leer’).

‘a veces’ – This phrase means ‘sometimes’ or ‘occasionally’. It would translate literally as ‘at times’.

‘Dolce’ – This is a reference to the Italian luxury fashion brand Dolce & Gabbana.

‘Bulgari’ – This is an Italian luxury brand known for its jewelry, watches, fragrances, and accessories.

‘venirse’ – The verb ‘venir’ means ‘to come’, ‘to arrive’, ‘to return’ or ‘to come back’. The pronominal form ‘venirse’ can also mean ‘to come’ or ‘to come back’; however, this term can also be a slang and vulgar/offensive way to say ‘to orgasm’. In the context of this song I think the latter meaning is the more likely one.

‘oponerse’ – The verb ‘oponer’ means ‘to oppose’ or ‘to resist’. The pronominal form ‘oponerse’ means ‘to disagree with’, ‘to be the opposite of’ or ‘to object’.

‘tú me tiras’ – In standard Spanish usage the verb ‘tirar’ means ‘to throw’, ‘to drop’, ‘to throw out/away’, ‘to waste, squander; let off, set off In Puerto Rican slang the verb ‘tirar’ is used in reference to things like messages to mean ‘to contact’. A similar English expression might be ‘to hit someone up’, i.e. ‘hit me up on my cell’.

‘sin cojones’ – This vulgar, slang phrase has a couple of meanings. This first is ‘cowardly’. The second meaning, and the one that makes sense in this context, is ‘I don’t care at all’, or ‘I don’t give a f**k’. It can also mean ‘I’m not scared of it at all’. It translates literally as ‘without balls/testicles’.

‘mami’ – While this term can mean ‘mommy’, it is very often used as a slang term to refer to an attractive woman, a female romantic partner, or a close female friend.

‘Urus’ – This is an SUV made by Lamborghini.

‘dar vueltas’ – Literally translating as ‘to give revolutions’, this phrase means ‘to go around in circles’, or to go around and around’.

‘Condado’ – This is an upscale, oceanfront neighborhood in Santurce, a suburb of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

‘arrebata’o’ – This is a contraction of the adjective ‘arrebatado’, which in standard Spanish means ‘half-cocked’, ‘rushed’, ‘hurried’, ‘aggressive’ or ‘inconsiderate’. However, in Puerto Rican slang it means a person who is under the effects of drugs, especially marihuana. English synonyms could be ‘high’, ‘baked’ or ‘stoned’.

‘gustar’ – The verb gustar is used to state that someone likes something, but the person doing the liking is the object of the sentence, not the subject. Literally, this phrase means ‘[item] is pleasing to [person]’. The verb is conjugated for the item being liked, for example ‘me gusta el libro’ (singular) but ‘me gustan los libros’ (plural).

‘Sephora’ – This is a French beauty product retailer.

‘Louis Vuitton’ – This is a French fashion and luxury goods company.

‘Pandora’ – This is a Danish jewelry company.

Puerto Rican Anglecisms

Puerto Rican slang is full of anglicisms, or words that have been borrowed from English. This is likely due at least in part to its connection to the US. There are several in this song:

‘parties’ – This is just the use o the English term ‘party’. The real Spanish word for ‘party’ is ‘fiesta’.

‘juqueado’ – This is a Spanish adjective made from the English term ‘hooked’. The English is spelled phonetically and given a standard Spanish adjective ending.

‘parquea’o’ – This is a Spanish adjective made from the English term ‘parked’. The English is spelled phonetically and given a standard Spanish adjective ending.

‘wheeleando’ – This is a Spanish verb adapted from the English phrase ‘doing wheelies’. The noun ‘wheelie’ is made into a verb by giving it a standard Spanish verb ending, in this case the gerund ending.
