“Carrousel” is a collaboration between French singer/songwriters Amir and Indila. The video was released in April of 2021, and the song appears on Amir’s 2020 album Ressources. The single reached number five on the French charts.
‘qu’est-ce qui’ – I suppose if you translated this phrase literally it would be something like ‘what is this that’ or ‘what is that that’. This phrase is used in questions and translates as ‘what’ or ‘who’. For example ‘qu’est-ce qui arrive ?’ meaning ‘what is happening?’
‘le Vésuve’ – This is the French name of Mount Vesuvius, a volcano in Italy, near Naples. Mount Vesuvius is the volcano that destroyed Pompeii.
‘au fond de’ – Literally translating as ‘at the bottom/back/end of’, this phrase can carry the literal meaning, or can mean ‘deep in’, or ‘in the depths of’.
‘aller-retour’ – This compound noun, made up of the nouns ‘aller’ meaning ‘outward journey’ or ‘going’ and ‘retour’ meaning ‘return’ or ‘journey back’, means ’round trip’.
‘ticket’ – This is one of two terms in French that typically translate as ‘ticket’ in English, but they are not interchangeable. The correct term depends on the type of ticket in question. ‘Ticket’ is used for bus or métro tickets, or for attraction tickets like a carousel. Tickets for planes, trains and things like theatre, concert or museum tickets use the term ‘billet’. In general ‘tickets’ tend to be small and more general use tickets not specialized to a specific time, destination, or seat (ie any bus or métro line anytime, or access to an attraction anytime), whereas ‘billets’ tend to be larger and are for a specific event and/or seat (ie a voyage at a specified time to a specified location, or an event at a specified time, both often also with specified seating).
‘le plus’ – Literally translating as ‘the more’, this phrase means ‘the most’ or ‘the [adj]est’, for example ‘le plus grand’ means ‘the biggest’ or ‘le plus beau’ means ‘the prettiest’ or ‘the most beautiful’.
‘à peine’ – Literally translating as ‘at pain, effort, or difficulty’, this phrase means ‘hardly’, ‘barely’ or ‘scarcely’.
‘Faudra’ – This is the future tense conjugation of the phrase ‘il faut’ which is often translated as ‘to have to’, ‘must’ or ‘it is necessary’. It will often be followed by a pronoun and a verb conjugated in the subjunctive, to say who has to or must do something, for example ‘il faut que j’aille’ (I have to go) or ‘il faut que tu fasses tes devoirs’ (you have to do your homework). When there is no pronoun used, ‘il faut’ is often understood to mean you must, as in a person in general.
‘Faudra me préserver’ – Because ‘faudra’ is impersonal this phrase could be understood in a couple of ways. ‘Il faut’ is often translated as ‘you have to’, so this could be understood as ‘you will have to protect me’. However, as the verb ‘préserver’ is also used reflexively, it could be understood as ‘I will have to protect myself’. I have chosen the latter meaning for my translation.
‘dernier souffle’ – Literally translating as ‘last breath’, this phrase can also be translated as ‘dying breath’ or ‘final breath’
‘avoir peur’ – This is one of the many phrases that uses ‘avoir’ in French. Meaning ‘to be afraid’ or ‘to be scared’, it translates literally as ‘to have fear’.

[Intro] Qu’est-ce qui m’arrive, qu’est-ce qui me traine What is happening to me, what is dragging me J’ai le Vésuve au fond des veines I have Vesuvius deep in my veins Aaah, elle est si belle Aaah, she is so beautiful La douleur qui m’interpelle The pain that is calling out to me
[Verse 1] Le plus beau des coups que la vie assène The finest of blows that life deals Le plus beau décor, deux corps qui jouent la scène The most beautiful scenery, two bodies acting out the scene Je suis tant étourdi, je tiens à peine I’m so dazed, I’m barely holding on Mais ces désirs me retiennent But these desires hold me back
[Chorus 1] Et jе cours, j’ai le cœur en aller-rеtour And I’m running, my heart is on a round trip C’est la première fois It’s the first time J’ai trouvé un ticket pour elle I found a ticket for her Dans ce carrousel On this carousel Et jе cours, j’ai le cœur en aller-rеtour And I’m running, my heart is on a round trip C’est la première fois It’s the first time J’ai trouvé un ticket pour elle I found a ticket for her Dans ce carrousel On this carousel
