About the Artists

Vitaa

Charlotte Gonin, who performs under the stage name Vitaa, is a singer/songwriter from Mulhouse, France. Her stage name Vitaa was inspired by her mother’s middle name and her great-grandmother’s first name, Vita, meaning life in Italian.

She got her first exposure collaborating with French rapper Dadoo on two songs, “Pas à pas” and “Oublie”, which got radio play. She did duets with several other artists and another song, “Sur ta route” with Dadoo, but it was her duet “Confessions nocturnes” with French rapper/singer/songwriter Diam’s in 2006 that launched her into the public eye. In 2010 she opened for three shows on Rhianna’s Last Girl on Earth Tour. In 2010 she and Robin Thicke did a French version of his song “Feel Good”. November 2015 saw the release of her fourth album La même and a style shift away from R&B and towards pop. In May 2017 she released her fifth album J4M which included collaborations with Stromae, Jul, and Claudio Capéo.

She was invited to be a judge on the Belgian version of The Voice (The Voice Belgique) and The Voice Kids (The Voice Kids Belgique), where she was a judge next to Slimane in 2018 and 2019. In 2020 she voiced the charachter princess Poppy in the French version of Trolls World Tour (Les Trolls 2 : Tourée mondiale).

Vitaa has seen continued success in the French market, especially recently in her collaborations with Slimane. In 2020 she won the Best Original Song trophy at the Victoires de la musique music awards.

Cultural References, Idioms and Explanations

‘se sentir seul’ – Translating literally as ‘to feel alone’, this phrase usually translates as ‘to be lonely’.

‘ne … plus rien’ – This is a common form of negation. Used in the same way as ‘ne … pas’ (sandwiched around the verb), it means ‘nothing left’, ‘nothing anymore’, ‘nothing else’ or ‘no more’.

‘savoir’ + verb – When the verb ‘savoir’ (to know) is followed by an infinitive, it means ‘to know how to’ do the action represented by the infinitive.

‘faire mal’ – Literally translating as ‘to do bad’, this phrase means ‘to hurt’.

‘avoir mal’ – Literally translating as ‘to have bad’, this phrase means ‘to be in pain’ or ‘to hurt’.

‘se planter’ = While the verb ‘planter’ means ‘to plant’, ‘to dump’ or ‘to ditch’, ‘se planter means ‘to get it wrong’ or ‘to screw up’.

‘à vrai dire’ – Meaning ‘to tell the truth’, this phrase is used like ‘in truth’, ‘in fact’ or ‘to be honest’. For example “Est-ce que tu aimes les chats? À vrai dire, je préfère les chiens. (Do you like cats? Honestly, I prefer dogs.)

‘se relever’ – This phrase means ‘to pick oneself up’, ‘to get back up’ or ‘to get back on one’s feet’. As in English, this phrase means both to literally to stand back up, as well as the figurative meaning of adjusting to a disruptive change.

‘tenir à’ -Literally meaning ‘to stick to’, this phrase can also mean ‘to matter to’ or ‘to be important to’.

‘au fond’ – Literally meaning ‘at he bottom’, this phrase means ‘deep down’, ‘fundamentally’ or ‘essentially’.

‘qu’est-ce qu’on’ – Even though ‘qu’est-ce que’ is a question marker, when ‘qu’est-ce qu’on’ is added to a phrase, the speaker isn’t really asking, rather it is added for emphasis. There isn’t a good translation for this. In the song I have simply added the word ‘really’ to the phrase.

Ça va, ça vient

[Verse 1]
Dis-le moi, dis-le moi si tu te sens seul
Au milieu de la foule, quand plus rien ne sait toucher ton cœur
Dis-le moi, dis-le moi si ça fait trop mal
On t’a tellement déçu

[Chorus]
Ça va, ça vient, ça va, ça vient
Ça va, ça vient
Ça tient à rien
Dis-le moi, dis-le moi encore
Ça va, ça vient, ça va, ça vient
Ça tient à rien
Au fond, tout va bien

[Bridge]
On est pas bien , alors?
On est pas bien?
On est pas bien ?
En vrai, qu’est-c’qu’on est bien
On est pas bien , alors?
On est pas bien?
On est pas bien ?
En vrai, qu’est-c’qu’on est bien

Tu sais, dans la vie, ça va, ça vient

[Chorus]
Ça va, ça vient, ça va, ça vient
Ça va, ça vient
Ça tient à rien
Dis-le moi, dis-le moi encore
Ça va, ça vient, ça va, ça vient
Ça tient à rien
Au fond, tout va bien

[Bridge]
On est pas bien , alors?
On est pas bien?
On est pas bien ?
En vrai, qu’est-c’qu’on est bien
On est pas bien , alors?
On est pas bien?
On est pas bien ?
En vrai, qu’est-c’qu’on est bien

Lyrics with Translation

Songs in any language often leave room for multiple interpretations. Following is my interpretation of the song lyrics.

Ça va, ça vient
It goes, it comes

[Verse 1]
Dis-le moi, dis-le moi si tu te sens seul
Tell me, tell me if you’re lonely
Au milieu de la foule, quand plus rien ne sait toucher ton cœur
In the crowd, when nothing knows how to touch your heart
Dis-le moi, dis-le moi si ça fait trop mal
Tell me, tell me if it hurts too much
On t’a tellement déçu
We’ve disappointed you so much
Que tu dis qu’avoir mal, c’est normal
You say that to hurt, it’s normal

[Pre-Chorus]
Tu l’sais, dans la vie, on s’est tous plantés
You know, in life, we’ve all screwed up
C’est vrai, combien d’fois on a dû se relever?
It’s true, how many times did we have to get back up?
Personne n’est parfait, on est tous sortis du chemin
Nobody’s perfect, we’ve all strayed from the path
Tu sais, dans la vie, ça va, ça vient
You know, in life, it goes, it comes

[Chorus]
Ça va, ça vient, ça va, ça vient
It goes, it comes, it goes, it comes
Ça va, ça vient
It goes, it comes
Ça tient à rien
It doesn’t matter
Dis-le moi, dis-le moi encore
Tell me, tell me again
Ça va, ça vient, ça va, ça vient
It goes, it comes, it goes, it comes
Ça tient à rien
It doesn’t matter
Au fond, tout va bien
Deep down, everything is fine

[Verse 2]
Dis-le moi, dis-le moi, si plus rien n’a de sens
Tell me, tell me, if nothing else makes sense
Si tu n’as plus la foi, plus rien à donner
If you no longer have faith, nothing left to give
Dis-le moi, dis-le moi, si t’as tout essayé
Tell me, tell me, if you tried everything
Tout tenté, espéré que ton monde change
Attempted everything, hoped that your world would change

[Pre-Chorus]
Tu l’sais, dans la vie, on s’est tous plantés
You know, in life, we’ve all screwed up
C’est vrai, combien d’fois on a dû se relever?
It’s true, how many times did we have to get back up?

Tell me, tell me again
Ça va, ça vient, ça va, ça vient
It goes, it comes, it goes, it comes
Ça tient à rien
It doesn’t matter
Au fond, tout va bien
Deep down, everything is fine

[Bridge]
On est pas bien là, alors?
Aren’t we good here, then?
On est pas bien?
Aren’t we good?
On est pas bien là?
Aren’t we good here?
En vrai, qu’est-c’qu’on est bien
For real, we’re really good
On est pas bien là, alors?
Aren’t we good here, then?
On est pas bien?
Aren’t we good?
On est pas bien là?
Aren’t we good here?
En vrai, qu’est-c’qu’on est bien
For real, we’re really good
