About the Artists

Selena Gomez

Selena Marie Gomez is a third-generation American-Mexican singer, actress, and producer from Texas. Gomez began her career as an actress, appearing on the children’s television series Barney & Friends from 2002 to 2004. She rose to prominence in her teens as Alex Russo in the Disney Channel television series Wizards of Waverly Place from 2007 to 2012.

While her acting roles often included musical elements, she decided to transition to music and formed the band Selena Gomez & the Scene. The band released their first of three albums, entitled Kiss & Tell, in 2009. All three of the band’s albums peaked in the top ten on the US Billboard 200 and attained gold certifications. In January of 2012, she announced that she would be taking a break from music, however, in October of that year she confirmed she was working on new music. She later confirmed that she would be releasing a solo album, as opposed to another album with the band. Her first solo album Stars Dance was released in July of 2013 and became her first album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album’s lead single “Come & Get It” became her first top-ten entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In January of 2021, Gomez released the singles “De Una Vez” and “Baila Conmigo” from her first Spanish-language EP, Revelación, released in March.

Gomez has seen much success in her solo career. All three of her solo albums to date have debuted atop the Billboard 200, and she has scored eight top-ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100. She is one of only six female artists to have three singles from the same album reach number one on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. As of 2017, Gomez had sold over seven million albums and 22 million singles worldwide. In 2017 she was honored as the Billboard Woman of the Year, and at 17 years old she was appointed a UNICEF ambassador.

Rauw Alejandro

Raúl Alejandro Ocasio Ruiz, who performs as Rauw Alejandro, is a rapper, singer and composer from San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is a childhood friend of fellow Puerto Rican rapper Anuel AA. Alejandro originally pursued a career in football (or soccer for the Americans). After an injury when he was 20 he moved to Orlando Florida hoping to be scouted to play in the Premier Development League (PDL) but was unsuccessful. After leaving football he decided to switch to a musical career. He began publishing songs to SoundCloud in 2014, and in 2016 he released his debut mixtape Punto de Equilibrio. In 2018, he was part of Sony Music’s “Los Próximos” project, which sought to enlist new musical talent. Other artists noticed him as a result of his participation, which led to collaborations with artists like Kevin Roldán, Khea, Ozuna, Lunay and Lyanno. His first single as a lead artist, a collaboration with Alex Rose entitled “Toda”, was released in December 2017. The single peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs charts, and the music video on YouTube had over 1 billion views as of November 2020. His most successful song to date was the single “Fantasias” with Farruko, which peaked at number 12 on the US Latin chart and stayed there for 20 weeks. He released his debut album, Afrodisíaco, in November of 2020.

Cultural References, Idioms and Explanations

‘comer a alguien’ – Literally translating as ‘to eat someone’, this phrase can either mean ‘to kiss someone’ or ‘to have sex’.

‘Comernos sin entenderno’ e’ mejor’ – This is an example of the reflexive being used reciprocally. The ‘nos’ here, rather than meaning ‘ourselves’, means ‘each other’. So this phrase means ‘kissing each other without understanding each other is better’.

‘venir’ vs ‘venirse’ – Both of these mean ‘to come’, and both appear in this song. While the difference between the two is quite subtle, the pronominal version ‘venirse’ is usually considered to be a bit more emphatic than using just ‘ venir’. However, as there are places where ‘venirse’ is a vulgar way to say ‘to have an orgasm’, the pronominal version should be used with caution.

‘Tranqui’ – This is a shortened version of the adjective ‘tranquilo’. It is used in colloquial speech as an interjection to tell someone to ‘calm down’ or to ‘relax’.

‘echar de menos’ – This phrase means ‘to miss’, ‘to notice something is missing’, or ‘to not be able to find something’. Its literal translation would be something like ‘to throw less of something’, which likely seems odd to you. The reason is that this phrase originally comes from a Galician-Portuguese idiom ‘achar de menos’, which means ‘to feel an absence’, or literally ‘to find less of something’. When the phrase was adopted into Spanish, rather than using the verb ‘hallar’ which means ‘to find’, the verb ‘echar’ meaning ‘to throw’ was used due to its similar pronunciation to ‘achar’.

‘Tenía curiosidad’ – This is one of the phrases with ‘tener’. In Spanish one literally ‘has curiosity’.

‘pegarse a alguien’ – The pronominal verb ‘pegarse’ means ‘to stick to’, and is usually used for things like food sticking to a pan. When used regarding another person it means ‘to stay close to’ someone or ‘to stick close to’ someone.

‘por una vez’ – Literally translating as ‘for one time’, this phrase means ‘for once’.

‘dar mente’ – Literally translating as ‘to give mind’, the phrase means ‘to think something over deeply’, ‘to analyze’ or ‘to study’.

‘de frente’ – Literally translating as ‘of forehead’, this phrase means ‘frankly’, ‘openly’, ‘head-on’ or ‘squarely’.

‘lo que’ – Literally translating as ‘it that’, this phrase better translates as ‘what’, ‘whatever’, or ‘which’.

‘ir a’ – The verb ‘ir’ means ‘to go’. As in English, when this verb is used with a place, it implies movement towards that place. But when it is used with another verb, it implies that that action will be preformed in the future. For example ‘I am going to the store’ ‘(voy a la tienda’) vs ‘I am going to eat’ (‘voy a comer’).

‘tener que’ – While by itself the verb ‘tener’ means ‘to have’, when followed by ‘que’ it means to have to do, for example ‘tengo que irme’ (I have to leave), or ‘tienes que hacer tus deberes’ (you have to do your homework).

Subjunctive

There are several instances of the subjunctive mood in this song. Below are the triggers for each instance.

‘Quieres que’ – ‘Querer que’ means ‘to want’ and is one of the wishing/willing/commanding verbs and therefore takes the subjunctive. Note that the subject of the verb ‘querer’ will usually be different than the subject of the verb that follows ‘que’. We see an example of this in this song where the subject of ‘querer’ is ‘tú’ and the subject of the verb ‘caer’ is ‘yo’. ‘Quieres (tú) que caiga (yo) en tentaciones’, meaning ‘You want me to fall into temptation’.

‘dejemo’ que’ – ‘Dejar que’ means ‘to let’ or ‘to allow’ and is another of the wishing/willing/commanding verbs and therefore takes the subjunctive.

‘pa’ que’ – Short for ‘ para que’ this phrase means ‘so that’ or ‘in order that’ and always takes the subjunctive.

‘cuando’ – Like other conjunctions of time, ‘cuando’ can be followed by either the indicative or the subjunctive. If what follows is either habitual or in the past, the indicative, or the regular present tense, will be used. If what follows is a command or a future event yet to happen, then the subjunctive will be required. In our example “Sólo tiene’ que llamar cuando me eches de menos” we see the subjunctive of the verb echar because the event (when you miss me) hasn’t happened yet.

‘aunque’ – This conjuction means ‘although’, ‘even though’ or ‘even if’, and can also be followed by either the indicative or the subjunctive. If what follows is a known fact, or the outcome is known, the indicative will be used, otherwise use the subjunctive. Here we see “aunque me quede lejos”, meaning ‘even if I’m far away’. The use of the subjunctive implies that being far away is not a sure thing, just a possibility.

Lyrics with Translation

Songs in any language often leave room for multiple interpretations. Following is my interpretation of the song lyrics.

Baila Conmigo
Dance With Me

[Intro]
Bebé, no sé si hablas mucho español
Baby, I don’t know if you speak very much Spanish
Si entiende’ cuando digo “Mi amor”
If you understand when I say “my love”
Comernos sin entenderno’ e’ mejor
Kissing each other without understanding each other is better
Solo tenemo’ que gustarno’
We just have to like each other
Quieres que caiga en tentaciones
You want me to fall into temptation
Mira cómo me pone
Look what it does to me
Ese acento que tienes
That accent that you have
No entiendo mucho, pero vente
I don’t understand much, but come

[Chorus]
Baila, baila, baila conmigo
Dance, dance, dance with me
Baila, baila, que yo te sigo
Dance, dance, let me follow you
Pégate, ven, suéltate
Stick close, come, let loose
No te me vayas sin las gana’ de volver
Do not leave me without the desire to come back
Por eso, baila, baila, baila conmigo
So, dance, dance, dance with me
Baila, baila, quе yo te sigo
Dance, dance, let me follow you
Bésame solo una vez
Kiss me just once
Así tеngo un motivo pa’ volverte a ver
So I have a reason to see you again

[Verse 1]
Sinceramente, dejemo’ que esto fluya, no sigas dándole mente
Honestly, let’s let this flow, don’t keep thinking about it
Tenemo’ to’a la noche pa’ que me enseñe’ de frente
We’ve got the whole night so that you can openly show me
Todo lo que siente’
Everything you feel
Me huele a que no tiene’ nada de inocente
It smells to me like there is nothing innocent about you
¿Cómo te digo que no quiero hablar de amor?
How do I tell you that I don’t want to talk about love?
Que si es contigo, tengo que pensar mejor
That if it’s with you, I have to think better
Tranqui, déjalo así, quiero quedarme aquí
Relax, leave it ike that, I want to stay here
Pégate, ven a mí, pégate, ven a mí
Come close, come to me, come close, come to me

[Chorus]
Baila, baila, baila conmigo
Dance, dance, dance with me
Baila, baila, que yo te sigo
Dance, dance, let me follow you

Sólo tiene’ que llamar cuando me eches de meno’
You just have to call when you miss me
Que yo le voy a llegar
Because I will arrive
Baby, aunque me quede lejo’
Baby, even if I stay far away
La nena e’ de otra ciudad, pero le corre mi flow
The girl is from another city, but my flow runs through her
Tenía curiosidad y un beso me robó
I was curious and she stole a kiss from me
No nos tenemo’ que hablar
We don’t have to talk
Si con mirarno’ no’ entendemo’
If by looking at each other we understand each other
No entiendo mucho, pero…
I don’t understand much, but…
