From the day I launched this site, I said “someday I’d like to add German”. So now that I am finally doing it, I figured what more fitting way to start than with a song that says “someday is now”. “Irgendwann ist jetzt” is a song by German singer/songwriter Max Giesinger. It was released in February of 2021 and doesn’t currently appear on an album. This week it is number 74 on the German charts, having spent 10 weeks on the chart and peaking at number 64.

About the Artist

Max Giesinger is a singer-songwriter from Waldbronn, Baden-Württemberg in southwest Germany. He joined his first band, the Deadly Punks, when he was 13. He first began to gain popularity in 2011 when he participated in the television singing show The Voice of Germany, where he finished fourth. His song “Dach der Welt” reached 14th place on the German charts. In 2014 he self-published his first album, entitled Laufen lernen, through a crowdfunding campaign which reached it’s financial goal within 24 hours. While his first album wasn’t super successful, his second album in 2016, entitled Der Junge, der rennt, saw far more success, reaching number 20 on the German charts. The first single from this album, “80 Millionen”, reached number 2 on the German charts, in part thanks to a new version which was recorded for the UEFA Euro 2016.

‘sich nehmen’ – When the verb ‘nehmen’, meaning ‘to take’, is used with a reflexive pronoun (dative) it carries the meaning of using something such as time or effort for a specific purpose. For example ‘Du solltest dir etwas Zeit nehmen, um dich zu entspannen’ meaning ‘You should take some time to relax’. The example in this song is ‘Irgendwann will ich mir Zeit für mich nehm’n’, meaning ‘Someday I want to take time for myself’.

‘immer’ vs ‘schon immer’ – While both of these translate as ‘always’, there is a nuanced difference in meaning. By itself, ‘immer’ is often used for things like habitual occurrences, for example, ‘Ich trinke immer Kaffee zum Frühstück’ meaning ‘I always drink coffee for breakfast’. However, when ‘schon’ is added the meaning shifts slightly to imply that something has been a certain way for a very long time, possibly since the beginning. For example ‘das war doch schon immer so’ meaning ‘that has always been like that’ (all along, from the beginning). We see examples of both uses here in this song: ‘Und sag’ immer nur „Irgendwann“’ – And I always say “someday” (habitually, every time I talk about the things I want to do) versus ‘Schon immer in mir steckt’ – Was always inside of me (all along, from the very beginning).

‘gefallen’ – The verb ‘gefallen’ is used to state that someone likes something, but the person doing the liking in the indirect object of the sentence rather than the subject, and will take the dative case. Literally, this phrase means ‘[item] is pleasing to [person]’. The verb is conjugated for the item being liked, for example ‘das Buch gefällt mir’ (singular) but ‘Die Bücher gefallen mir’ (plural).

‘bis dahin’ – Literally translating as ‘until there’, this phrase means ‘until then’ or ‘by then’.

‘was’ – Although the term ‘was’ means ‘what’, it can also be a shortening of the term ‘etwas’, meaning ‘something’, often seen in colloquial language.
