Ricky Martin

Enrique Martín Morales, who performs as Ricky Martin, is a singer, songwriter and actor from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Martin got his start in music at the age of twelve when he joined the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo. At seventeen years old he left the group and began a solo career while also pursing acting. His first solo album, the Spanish-language Ricky Martin was released in November of 1991. After releasing several Spanish language albums he wrote “La copa de la vida” for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. His performance at the World Cup final was broadcast to over a billion viewers in 187 countries and reached number one on the charts around the word, going gold and platinum in various countries. In 1999 he performed this song at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards, and was credited with bringing Latin pop to mainstream American audiences and sparking nationwide interest in Latin music.

Following this success, Martin attained worldwide success with the release of his first English-language album Ricky Martin, which included the single “Livin’ la Vida Loca”. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, sold 661,000 copies in the first week, and became the most successful album debut on the Billboard charts by a Hispanic artist. It is his best selling album to date, reaching number one in many countries around the world and having sold 15 million copies worldwide, earning 7× platinum certification in the US. The single “Livin’ la Vida Loca” is generally seen as the song that began the Latin pop explosion of 1999 and paved the way for other Spanish-speaking artists like Enrique Iglesias and Shakira to move into the English-speaking market.

Ricky Martin has received numerous awards, including 2 Grammy Awards, 4 Latin Grammy Awards, 5 MTV Video Music Awards, 3 Billboard Music Awards, 9 Billboard Latin Music Awards, 2 American Music Awards, and 2 Latin American Music Awards. Cultural References, Idioms and Explanations

‘recuerdo’ – The word ‘recuerdo’ can either be a noun meaning ‘memory’ or the first person singular (yo) present tense conjugation of the verb ‘recordar’ meaning ‘to remember’. As both meanings appear in this song the title could mean either, though I have chosen ‘memory’ as it appears both in the chorus and more times throughout the song.

‘no tengo saciedad’ – Translating literally as ‘I don’t have satiation’, a better translation for this phrase would be ‘I can’t get enough of you’.

‘lo que’ – Literally translating as ‘it that’, this phrase better translates as ‘what’, ‘whatever’, or ‘which’.

‘pedir’ – This verb usually means ‘to ask for’, however it can also mean ‘to need’, ‘to want’ or ‘to cry out for’, for example ‘estas paredes están pidiendo una mano de pintura’ meaning ‘these walls are needing a coat of paint’ or even ‘these walls are crying out for a coat of paint’.

‘al dormir’ – The contraction ‘al’ (a + el) means that something is done at the time of the accompanying noun or verb. For example ‘al amanecer’ means ‘at dawn’, ‘al llegar’ means ‘on arrival’ and here ‘al dormir’ means ‘when at sleep’.

Recuerdo

[Verse 1]
Vengo a ti, confieso
Cada emoción latiendo
Esto me impide respirar
Ya no puedo
Me perdí en tu cuerpo
Cada rincón secreto
De ti no tengo saciedad
Son tus besos

[Pre-Chorus]
No puedo fingir
Lo que ves en es por ti
Déjame sentir
Solo acércate

[Chorus]
Porque en ti pude ver mi reflejo
La mitad de mi vida hecha verso
Cada sol, cada luna en mi cielo
Y en tus ojos mi sustento
Fue tu luz la ilusión, la caricia
Tus palabras besando las mías
Fue tu aroma, poción tan divina
Tu recuerdo no puedo olvidar

[Verse 2]
Busco en mi silencio
Cada razón que puedo
Mi mente pide olvidar
Yo no puedo
Fuiste el firmamento
Un bálsamo, un misterio
Contigo hice mi verdad
Y mi credo

Lo que ves en es por ti
