Dative Case

The dative case is used for the indirect object of a phrase. It also follows certain verbs and prepositions. The tables below show the declensions of the definite articles and indefinite articles in the dative case.

Definite Articles

Nominativederdiedasdiethe

Indefinite Articles

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuterPluralMeaning
Nominativeeineineeinnonea/an

Note that the possessive adjectives (we see declensions of ‘mein’ in this song) follow the same pattern at ‘ein’.

Declension of ‘fest’

These declensions are only used when adjectives are not accompanied by an article or a pronoun, and therefore they carry the responsibility of showing the gender, number and case of the noun. We see an example in this song with the adjective ‘fest’ in the phrase ‘auf festem Boden’ meaning ‘on solid ground’.

Nominativefesterfestefestesfeste
