Stem-Changing Verbs

Some Spanish verbs require changes to the verb stem during conjugation, where one vowel is replaced by a different vowel or combination of vowels. These verbs take the normal -ar, -er or -ir endings. There are three groups of stem-changing verbs:

  • e‘ to ‘ie
  • e‘ to ‘i
  • o‘ to ‘ue

This stem change applies to all conjugations other than nosotros and vosotros. These verbs are also called boot verbs, due to the shape drawn around the conjugated verbs in table form, as shown below with the verb ‘querer’, which takes an ‘e’ to ‘ie’ stem change.

Irregular ‘yo’ form

In addition to the stem change, two of the stem-changing verbs in this song also have an irregular ‘yo’ form. These verbs are called go verbs, due to the fact that the ‘yo’ form ends in ‘-go’. The verb ‘decir’ retains the stem change in the ‘yo’ form (digo). However, the stem change is not present in the ‘yo’ form of the verb ‘tener’ (tengo).
