Relative Pronouns
A relative pronoun is a pronoun that introduces a relative clause. Relative clauses give more information about a noun that has already been mentioned. The French relative pronouns are:
Pronoun | Function |
Qui | Subject Indirect object (person) |
Que | Direct object |
Lequel | Indirect object (thing) |
Dont | Object of preposition ‘de’ |
Où | Indicate place or time |
Only ‘lequel’ changes form to match the referenced noun by gender and number, becoming ‘laquelle’, ‘lesquels’ and ‘lesquelles’.
In this song we see the pronoun ‘auxquels’. This is simply a contraction of the preposition ‘à’ and the masculine plural form of ‘lequel’.
