About the Artists

Enrique Iglesias

Enrique Miguel Iglesias Preysler is a singer, songwriter, actor, and record producer from Madrid, Spain. He is the youngest child of singer Julio Iglesias. Early on Iglesias used the stage name “Enrique Martínez” (supposedly a singer from Guatamala), both because he didn’t want his father to know about his musical career, and because he didn’t want the Iglesias name to help advance his career. He borrowed money from his nanny to record a demo, containing one Spanish song and two English songs and his father’s former publicist Fernán Martínez helped him to promote it. He was signed to Fonovisa Records.

He released his first album, entitled Enrique Iglesias, in July of 1995. It sold half a million copies in the first week, which at the time was a rare accomplishment for an album in a language other than English. His 2002 album Quizás would provide several firsts for a Spanish-language album. It debuted at number twelve on the Billboard 200 albums chart, which was the highest a Spanish-language album had placed on that chart at the time. It was also the fastest selling Spanish album in five years, selling a million copies in one week. The single “Para Qué La Vida” was the only Spanish-language song to reach one million plays on US radio. The single “Quizás” was the first Spanish-language music video to be played on MTV’s Total Request Live, as well as the first Spanish song to be performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Iglesias has won more than 200 awards including 23 Billboard Music Awards and 36 Billboard Latin Music Awards, 8 American Music Awards, 1 Grammy , 5 Latin Grammy Awards, 10 World Music Awards, and 6 MTV awards. His songs have reached number one at least 150 times across the various Billboard charts. He holds the record for the most number-one singles on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks Chart with 27 singles. He has have five singles in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100, two of which reached number one. He is one of the best-selling Latin music artists, with an estimate of more than 70 million records sold. Billboard named him the “King of Latin Pop”.

Bad Bunny

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, who performs as Bad Buny, is a reggaeton and Latin trap singer from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. He took his stage name from a photograph of himself with an angry expression from a time when he was forced to wear a bunny costume to school. He began releasing music independently on SoundCloud in 2016, and was signed to the record label Hear this Music after his song “Diles” was noticed by DJ Luian. He would end up leaving this label before releasing any albums.

His breakthrough would come with the single “Soy Peor”, which reached number 22 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. The song reached 330 million views in ten months on YouTube. Throughout 2017 he would be featured on fifteen songs on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. “Ahora Me Llama”, his collaboration with Karol G reached number ten and had more than 756 million views on YouTube. The remix of “The Boté” with Ozuna and Nicky Jam even reached number one.

Bad Bunny would get his first Billboard Hot 100 single in May of 2018 with the single “I Like It”, a collaboration with Cardi B and J Balvin. In October of teh same year the song “Mia”, a collaboration with Drake would reach number five on the same chart. At the end of he year he would release his debut album X 100pre, which won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album.

In 2019 he released a collaborative album with J Balvin that reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Billboard US Latin Albums chart. His 2020 album YHLQMDLG (Yo hago lo que me da la gana, I do what I want) was the highest-charting all-Spanish album ever, reaching reached number two on the US Billboard 200. He performed on the main stage at Coachella in 2019, and in 2020 he was a guest performer at the Super Bowl LIV halftime show with Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.

Cultural References, Idioms and Explanations

‘se me paró – This phrase has a dual meaning. It means both ‘I stopped’, but is also a vulgar slang way of saying someone ‘is hard’, or ‘has an erection’.

‘Se’in pronominal verbs – Pronominal verbs are verbs that require the addition of a reflexive pronoun. Some verbs can be used with or without a prooun, but the meaning is different. Some of these verbs take an impersonal ‘se’ in combination with the reflexive pronoun, and imply an unintentional event. They take the fault for the happening off of the subject, which becomes the object. A common example of this is the verb ‘olvidar’ vs ‘olvidarse’. ‘Olvidé’ implies that it is my fault that I forgot, but ‘se me olvidó’ takes the fault off of me. It is just something that happened. Examples of this form in this song are ‘se me paró’ and ‘se me para el corazón’.

‘quiero que’ – The phrase ‘quiero que’ voices a hope or a wish and therefore something that is not certain, it is followed by a verb in the subjunctive tense.

‘dejar de hacer’ – Translating literally as ‘to leave doing’, this phrase means ‘to stop doing’ something. The verb ‘hacer’ will be replaced with another verb, for example ‘dejar de hablar’ means ‘to stop talking’.

‘gustar’ – The verb gustar is used to state that someone likes something, but the person doing the liking in the object of the sentence, not the subject. Literally this phrase means ‘[item] is pleasing to [person]’. The verb is conjugated for the item being liked, for example ‘me gusta el libro’ (singular) but ‘me gustan los libros’ (plural).

‘hay que ver’ – this would translate literally as something similar to ‘there is that to see’. It means ‘we’ll see’.

‘volver a hacer’ – Translating literally as ‘to return to do’, this phrase means ‘to do again’.

‘hacerse la loca’ – Meaning literally ‘to make oneself the crazy’, this phrase means ‘to play dumb’.

‘poco a poco’ – This phrase mans ‘little by little’.

‘Santa de día, diabla cuando cae la luna’ – The terms ‘santa’ and ‘diabla’ in this phrase are the feminine forms of the terms ‘santo’ and ‘diablo’, so he’s calling the woman a ‘saint’ and a ‘devil’.

El baño

[Intro]
Cuando yo te vi
A se me paró
El corazón, me dejó de latir
Quiero que estemos solos
Por ti me descontrolo
Discúlpame mi amor
Por esta invitación

[Chorus]

Tranquila, poco a poco me conoces

[Bridge]
Si somos novios
O somos panas
Tranquila, hay que ver mañana
Si somos novios
O somos nada
Tranquila, hay que ver mañana

Songs in any language often leave room for multiple interpretations. Following is my interpretation of the song lyrics.

El baño
The bathroom

[Intro]
Cuando yo te vi
When I saw you
A mí se me paró
It stopped me / It made me hard
El corazón, me dejó de latir
My heart stopped beating
Quiero que estemos solos
I want us to be alone
Por ti me descontrolo
For you, I’m out of control
Discúlpame mi amor
Forgive me my love
Por esta invitación
For this invitation

[Chorus]
Vámonos pal’ baño
Let’s go to the bathroom
Que nadie nos está viendo
So no one is watching us
Si no me conoces, nos vamos conociendo
If you don’t know me, we’ll get to know each other
Sé que suena loco, pero me gusta tanto
I know it sounds crazy, but I like it so much
Estar un día más así yo no lo aguanto
Being like this one more day, I can’t stand it
Vámono’ a la luna, vamono’ pal’ cine
Let’s go to the moon, let’s go to the movies
Vamo’ a darno’ un beso, que nunca se termine
Let’s give each other a kiss that never ends
Si quieres algo serio, hay que ver mañana
If you want something serious, we’ll see tomorrow
Si somos novios o somos panas
If we’re a couple, or just friends

[Bridge]
Si somos novios
If we’re a couple
O somos panas
Or if we’re just friends
Tranquila, hay que ver mañana
Relax, we’ll see tomorrow

[Verse 1]
Si te vuelvo a ver
If I ever see you again
Se me vuelve a parar
I will get hard again
La respiración, por verte bailar
Breathing, to see you dance
Si tú sabes que te gusto, por qué te haces la loca
If you know you like me, why are you playing dumb?
Cuando yo te miro, te muerdes la boca
When I look at you, you bite your mouth
Yo solo quiero verte bailando sin ropa
I just want to see you dancing without clothes
En la misma cama, en la misma nota
On the same bed, on the same note

[Chorus]
Vámonos pal’ baño
Let’s go to the bathroom
Que nadie nos está viendo
So no one is watching us
Si no me conoces, nos vamos conociendo

Relax, we’ll see tomorrow

[Verse 2]
Vacila que la vida va veloz
Have fun, because life goes fast
Igual que tu ex, que era medio precoz
Just like your ex, who was kind of immature
Contigo siempre echo más de dos
With you I always hand out more than two
Te calientas sola sin ponerte en defrost
You heat up on your own without using defrost
Tranquila, poco a poco me conoces
Relax, little by little you get to know me
Por ahora quiero darte en to’as las poses
For now I want to give it to you in all the poses
Si me dejas te lavo hasta dentro el closet
If you let me I’ll wash you even inside the closet
Ya tú estás caliente y todavía no son las doce
You’re already hot and it’s not twelve yet
Vacila que la vida es solo una
Have fun, because life is only one
A mí se me para el corazón, a ti se te hace una laguna
My heart stops, your memory lapses
Me llama después de la una
Call me after one
Santa de día, diabla cuando cae la luna
Saint by day, devil when the moon falls

[Chorus]
Vámonos pal’ baño
Let’s go to the bathroom
Que nadie nos está viendo
So no one is watching us
Si no me conoces, nos vamos conociendo
If you don’t know me, we’ll get to know each other
